Beat the Phobia: How to Enjoy Rock Climbing If You’re Scared of Heights
Everyone has something they’re afraid of. But some fears are more common than others.
Take acrophobia, for instance. Better known as the fear of heights, acrophobia is one of the most common fears out there affecting 7.5% of people.
But, like most fears, with hard work and persistence, it’s something one can overcome.
Of course, we understand that that’s easier said than done. But you shouldn’t let your fear of heights keep you from doing the things you love, like rock climbing.
Here are a few tips to help you master your fears once and for all and enjoy a fun new hobby.
Start Slow
The good news is that your fears are beatable. The bad news is that Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it’s going to take some time.
Don’t sweat it. What matters is that you keep trying.
Any progress is still progress, after all. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and go at your own pace.
If that means climbing five feet, so be it. That’s five feet higher than you could’ve seen yourself climbing before.
Talk with Experienced Climbers
If you’re dealing with a fear of heights, the idea that someone would climb rocks for fun might seem baffling. But plenty of people do it every day!
These climbers have a lot to teach you and can provide some helpful tips to get you on your journey.
Spend some time hanging out at your local rock climbing hotspots. If you don’t know where any climbs are, a quick Google search should tell you about any spots or rock gyms.
Approach with a friendly attitude and let them know you’re looking to conquer your fears once and for all. You’ll have a whole support system by the time you leave!
Learn About Safety Tools
If you’re feeling anxious about climbing, it’s probably because you’re focusing on all of the things that could go wrong.
While those are valid concerns, safety equipment can eliminate the vast majority of all dangers.
Rock climbing can be quite safe.
Read up on common accessories and consider buying your own harness, helmet, rope, and shoes.
If you’re not ready to drop money on a hobby that terrifies you, your local rock gym may provide some of these during your climb. Give them a call and see what you’ll need to bring.
When you get there, they’ll walk you through all of the various types of safety equipment.
Getting past the Fear of Heights
The fear of heights can seem downright debilitating during your first few climbs. But be patient with yourself. Celebrate every bit of progress you make and give yourself the credit you deserve.
If you stick with it and incrementally increase your climbs, you’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of.
